The sender accused Danas and two other media outlets, N1 TV and Nova S TV, of openly siding with “Albanian separatists” and Prime Minister Albin Kurti in Kosovo and “ethnic Albanian separatists” in southern Serbia, singling out columnist Snezana Congradin for specific criticism. The sender wrote that the newspaper’s “journalists and columnists are in mortal danger from certain far-right structures living in the shadows”. The email said that the reason for sending the threat is the newspaper’s reporting on Kosovo, Bosnia’s Republika Srpska entity and Montenegro. Twelve staff members at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were murdered in an armed attack by Islamists in 2015. The threatening email, which was sent from an account named ‘threateningaccount’, addressed Danas as the ‘Belgrade Charlie Hebdo’. The email sent via the Protonmail service threatened that “salvos of bullets” would be fired at the daily’s journalists, editors and columnists because of the newspaper’s editorial policy. He explained that the prosecution involved international authorities through a rapid reaction network based on a Council of Europe convention.ĭanas editor-in-chief Dragoljub Petrovic received the email on Sunday threatening violence against the independent newspaper and its staff. “I cannot talk about the data we have, but I believe that there is significant progress that could lead to results that are favourable for the further conduct of the proceedings,” said Stamenkovic, who is also a member of the government’s working group for the safety of journalists.
The Serbian Prosecutor’s Office on Monday requested urgent assistance from the authorities in Switzerland after a threatening message was sent via the Swiss-based Protonmail service to the daily newspaper Danas, said prosecutor Branko Stamenkovic.
